SPELUNKY (XBLA version) coming to PC, PS3 and Vita this Summer!

OK, OK. Settle down. I know you are excited. I am too!

As you have guessed by the title of this thread, Spelunky is coming home to the PC. As anyone who has played the enhanced XBLA version will know, this is a very good thing indeed. Originally starting life in 2008 as a freeware PC title, Spelunky soon gained huge popularity due to its wonderful pixel graphics, solid platforming action, addictive gameplay and maddening difficulty. It managed to perfectly combine a fantastic 2D platformer with elements of the Roguelike genre. Permadeath, randomly generated levels and items, and no saves or continues made Spelunky a hardcore title. But hardcore titles always gain the biggest cult followings, and the one man behind the genius, Derreck Yu, revealed that an Xbox Live Arcade version was in the works.

Released in 2012, the XBLA enhanced Spelunky experience absolutely blew me away, and many others clearly felt the same way as it garnered much critical acclaim. Now news has come in that this enhanced XBLA version is being ported back to its original home platform, the PC, as well as Sony's PS3 and Vita handheld. This is wonderful news for any non-Xbox owners, as well as anyone who wants an excuse (as if you need one) to play through the game again - and with the Vita, you can even play Spelunky on the train or bus. Win!

You can read my full review of the XBLA version.. a love letter to the game, if you will.. here.

This exciting news has got me in the mood for some Spelunkin', so I am off to fire up my Xbox. Stay tuned to Retro Spirit Games for all further Spelunky news.
